How to Measure Furniture Legs
Getting the right floor protector starts with getting the right measurement. You only need a ruler or tape measure marked in millimetres, and in most cases it takes less than a minute.
This guide can be used for chairs, tables, stools, desks, benches and other furniture with fitted floor protectors.
Important: Measure the furniture leg itself — not an old cap, felt pad or existing floor protector.
Step 1: Check the Shape of Your Furniture Leg
Look at the bottom section of the furniture leg and identify the closest shape.
Round
A circular furniture leg.
You need: 1 measurement — the diameter.
Square
The width and depth of the leg are the same.
You need: Usually 1 measurement.
Rectangular
One side of the leg is longer than the other.
You need: 2 measurements — width × depth.
Oval
A rounded or elliptical leg with a long side and a short side.
You need: 2 measurements.
Hairpin or Narrow Metal Legs
Usually a thin round metal rod, commonly found on tables, stools, desks and other furniture.
You need: 1 measurement — the diameter of the rod.
Step 2: Measure Your Furniture Leg
Round Legs
Measure straight across the leg from one side to the other through the centre. This measurement is called the diameter.
Example: If the leg measures 24 mm straight across, the diameter is 24 mm.
Do not measure around the outside of the leg. We need the diameter, not the circumference.
Square Legs
Measure straight across one flat side of the furniture leg.
Example: A leg measuring 25 mm across each side is a 25 × 25 mm square leg.
If the leg looks slightly uneven, measure it in both directions to make sure it is actually square.
Rectangular Legs
Measure both the width and depth of the furniture leg.
Example: If one side measures 20 mm and the other measures 40 mm, your furniture leg size is 20 × 40 mm.
Both measurements matter, so don't choose a protector based on the wider side alone.

Oval Legs
Measure the leg at its narrowest width and longest width.
Example: If the leg measures 20 mm across the narrow side and 40 mm across the long side, the size is 20 × 40 mm.
Both measurements need to be suitable for the floor protector.
Hairpin and Narrow Metal Legs
Measure the diameter of the metal rod itself.
Measure straight across the rod rather than around it.
Our hairpin leg protectors show the compatible leg diameter on each product page.
What If My Furniture Legs Are Tapered?
Many timber furniture legs become narrower towards the floor. This is common on chairs, dining tables, side tables and other timber furniture.
Don't automatically measure only the very bottom of the leg. You also need to consider the section of the leg that the floor protector will grip.
If the leg changes noticeably in size, take two measurements:
- one near the bottom of the leg; and
- one slightly higher where the protector will sit.
Compare these measurements with the fitting range shown on the product page.
What About Angled or Splayed Legs?
Some furniture legs sit on an angle rather than vertically. This is particularly common on dining chairs, stools and some tables.
The protector needs to grip the leg securely while allowing the base of the protector to sit properly against the floor.
If the legs are strongly angled, don't choose a protector based on width alone. Check the product photos and fitting information before ordering.
Tip: If you're unsure, send us a photo of the furniture leg from the side and underneath and we can help you choose.
Check More Than One Leg
Don't automatically assume every leg on a piece of furniture is exactly the same.
We recommend measuring at least two legs before ordering. If any of the legs look different in size, shape or angle, measure each type separately.
This is particularly important for:
- tapered furniture legs;
- angled or splayed legs;
- older or handmade furniture; and
- furniture where the front and rear legs have different designs.
Step 3: Choose the Correct Size
Once you have your measurements, check the sizing shown on the individual FloorSavers product page.
Different styles of floor protectors can use different sizing systems.
Products With a Size Range
Example: Fits 21–28 mm legs.
If your furniture leg measurement falls within that range, select that size.
Products With an Exact Size
Example: 25 × 25 mm.
Choose the size that matches the outside dimensions of your furniture leg.
Don't rely on stretch alone. Some silicone floor protectors are designed to fit a range of leg sizes, while other styles require a much closer match. Always follow the sizing information shown on the individual product page.
Quick Measurement Examples
Round Furniture Leg
Measures 26 mm straight across.
Look for a round protector with a fitting range that includes 26 mm.
Square Furniture Leg
Measures 30 mm across each side.
Look for a protector suitable for a 30 × 30 mm square leg.
Rectangular Furniture Leg
Measures 20 × 40 mm.
Look for a rectangular protector suitable for both measurements.
Oval Furniture Leg
Measures 16 × 34 mm.
Look for an oval protector suitable for both measurements.
Common Measuring Mistakes
Before ordering, make sure you haven't:
- measured around a round leg instead of straight across it;
- measured an old cap or floor protector instead of the furniture leg itself;
- measured only one side of a rectangular or oval leg;
- assumed every leg on the furniture is identical;
- measured only the very bottom of a heavily tapered leg; or
- rounded your measurement too far up or down.
For the best fit, measure as accurately as possible in millimetres.
Still Not Sure Which Size You Need?
If you're unsure, send us a few photos and we'll help you work out which FloorSavers are suitable before you order.
Please send:
- A clear photo of the furniture leg.
- A photo of the leg beside a ruler or tape measure.
- Your width, depth or diameter measurement in millimetres.
For unusual, tapered or angled legs, a photo from both the side and underneath is helpful.
